SPECIAL GUESTS

Jeff Cummins first found fame through a poster sold via the poster magazine Kung-Fu Monthly in 1975, after which he was commissioned by Felix Dennis to design two covers for the magazine. After the Kung-Fu Monthly years, Cummins designed the covers to several Doctor Who books by the publisher Target as well as working on the artwork for musical projects involving major talents including Paul McCartney, Rick Wakeman, Jon Anderson, Brian Lane, Whitesnake, Ted Nugent, Storm Thorgerson, Po and Pete at Hipgnosis, Silver Sun, and Mike Viola. He also created the artwork for an unreleased UK poster for the Robert Zemeckis film, Back to the Future.
Jeff Cummins will be attending The Rise of the Dragon to sign prints of his famous Kung-Fu Monthly artwork and to talk about his career.

Mark Strange
is a highly decorated British film actor and martial artist, recently playing one of the lead roles in the global award-winning action-horror film Redcon-1.
After the success of Redcon-1, Strange landed a featured role in Ip Man 4: The Finale (the highest-grossing martial arts movie franchise of all time and No.1 on Netflix US) in which he has an epic showdown with Bruce Lee (played by Danny Chan). In the film, Strange worked under legendary action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping (The Matrix trilogy, Kill Bill). The film went on to win a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Choreography and had and international release by Universal Pictures.
Mark Strange will be attending The Rise of the Dragon to talk about his career, sign items and pose for photos.

In 1972, John Young was a Scottish soldier serving in the British Army and was stationed in Hong Kong.
A martial arts student himself, he was invited to spend a day at the Golden Harvest studios on the set of The Way of the Dragon, Bruce Lee’s directorial debut. Lee’s tragic death the following year would leave The Way of the Dragon as the sole completed movie directed by the legendary martial arts star.
On the day that John Young visited the set, Bruce Lee would not act in any of the scenes so he had the rare opportunity to witness Lee as a film maker rather than a martial artist or actor.
John Young will be attending The Rise of the Dragon to sell and sign rare prints he shot on the Way of the Dragon film set.

SCREENINGS

ONE DAY IN 1959

In 1959, Bruce Lee is an eighteen year old thug from Hong Kong and the son of Lee Hoi Chuen, a successful Cantonese opera star. A student of local martial arts teacher Ip Man, Lee spends his days meeting up with his fellow gang members and getting into fights with rival gangs.

After getting into one fight too many and beating up the son of a local police officer, he is facing the threat of prison. Due to his influential father and in the hope of turning his life around, it has been agreed that Bruce will leave Hong Kong and emigrate to the United States, the country of his birth.

One Day in 1959 follows the young Bruce Lee as he spends his last few emotional days in Hong Kong with his friends, girlfriend, and martial arts teacher.

Stephen Au spent two years writing, directing and starring in One Day in 1959, originally released in 1999 as What Are You Gonna Do, Sai Fung?

In 2009, Au re-edited the film and released it on DVD in Japan under it’s new title One Day in 1959.

Screening at The Rise of the Dragon is the 2009 Director’s Cut of One Day in 1959, shown for the first time with English subtitles, along with an exclusive retrospective featurette.

BRUCE LEE: A WARRIOR'S JOURNEY

Award-winning director John Little's Bruce Lee: A Warrior’s Journey is a documentary about Lee’s life, career, and untimely death, which uses rare behind-the-scenes footage to paint a portrait of both the star the world knew and the man behind the image.

This documentary marked the first time the surviving Game of Death material has been assembled according to Lee’s script notes, in an attempt to honour Lee’s ambitious intentions for the film.

Breaking box office records with revolutionary martial arts movies, Bruce Lee rocketed to the top of Asia’s film industry a quarter of a century ago. His fifth movie, The Game of Death, would have been the most innovative of them all, intertwining his own martial philosophy of individual expression into the action and story line. Tragically, he died prior to its completion leaving behind one hundred minutes of out-takes and re-shoots. The script notes, story line, and much of the footage went unaccounted for, but since any Bruce Lee movie released at that time would make a fortune at the box office, producers spliced together less than twelve minutes of this footage, and shot their own story using Bruce Lee lookalikes, cardboard cut-outs, and other fancy tricks.

While the movie they released in 1978 carried Bruce’s intended title, it bore no resemblance to the film that Bruce envisaged.

THE WISDOM OF BRUCE LEE BOOK LAUNCH

Bruce Lee was a man of startling contradictions. His creation of Jeet Kune Do - his own personal expression of the martial arts - firmly established him as a master. This book is an analysis and an appreciation of the man who truly became a legend in his own time; a warrior whose every thought, word, and action was aimed toward a more perfect combination of philosophy and the art of fighting. Here is all that is known of the innermost secrets of the incomparable combatant, Bruce Lee; a man who dared to transcend the ancient disciplines and shape them into his own image.

The Wisdom of Bruce Lee was one of the first books to present Bruce Lee’s philosophy on life and the martial arts.

Written by Roger Hutchinson and Felix Dennis in 1976, The Wisdom of Bruce Lee was never published in the UK, despite a direct marketing strategy in the famous Kung-Fu Monthly poster magazine.

As part of the Kung-Fu Monthly Archive Series, The Wisdom of Bruce Lee is published for the first time in the UK with a history of the book and an exclusive interview with the original author, Roger Hutchinson.

The Wisdom of Bruce Lee will be released as two versions:

Firstly, a full-length hardback version will be released to blend in with the other Kung-Fu Monthly Archive Series books.

A second abridged softback version will be released based on the design of the 1978 Dutch version in the style of the original Kung-Fu Monthly books.

The abridged version of The Wisdom of Bruce Lee will be released as a LIMITED EDITION HARDBACK and limited to just 50 copies. This special hardback will only be available at The Rise of the Dragon event. Any copies left unsold may be made available for sale after the event but this cannot be guaranteed.

All versions of the book will be officially released on the 14th December but a limited amount of stock will be available for sale early at The Rise of Dragon.
